Opposition MPs have accused Trump of pushing America into the Iran-Israel war. Indian-origin Democratic MP Ro Khanna has appealed to all members of Congress to immediately return to Washington and vote on his proposal War Power Act to limit the military powers of President Donald Trump.
An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council is also to be held regarding America's air strike on Iran.
Melee in US Congress
Democratic leader Chuck Schumer in the Senate expressed strong objection and said, "No President should unilaterally push America into a war-like situation. This decision of Trump is very dangerous, due to which America itself has jumped into the Iran-Israel war."
US Congressman Ro Khanna has also appealed to Congress to come together against Trump. He said that so far his proposal has received the support of 47 Democrat MPs. His goal is that 213 Democrats support this proposal by the weekend.
Ro Khanna wrote on social media, "This is a decisive moment for the Democratic Party. We have to stand against the war against Iran. I am sending a letter tonight and requesting every MP to support my bill."
What is America's War Powers Act?
The War Powers Act in America is a legal provision, which was passed by the US Congress in 1973. Its purpose is to ensure that the President cannot unilaterally push America into war and Congress' permission is necessary for any military action. This law was made after the Vietnam War, when the President sent thousands of soldiers to war without explicit Congressional permission.
This caused great dissatisfaction among the American public and Parliament and there was a demand to limit the military powers of the President. If the President sends the army to a foreign operation without the permission of Congress, he has to give full information about it to Congress within 48 hours.
Attack on Iranian nuclear bases
On the orders of Trump, American B-2 bombers bombed nuclear bases Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan in Iran on Sunday, 22 June 2025. Democrat leaders believe that this action has dramatically increased the risk of a widespread and long-term war. Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi criticized Trump and said that "The President has disregarded the Constitution by deploying the US Army without the permission of Congress. This step puts the people of America in danger and gives rise to instability in the entire region."
