18/01/26, US congressman and a member of Donald Trump's Republican Party, Rich McCormick, reflected on how Pakistan seldom brings any investment opportunities into America.

Recently addressing American citizens at an event hosted by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), McCormick also highlighted how alienating India could lead to big trouble for the US in the coming years.

He highlighted India's economic and strategic importance at a time when ties with Washington have come under strain over tariffs and trade. McCormick said, "Pakistan is a country with 300 million people. But you don't see it bringing investments into America. India not only takes investments, but it also brings investments into the United States."

He further added that talent matters and India is supplying a tremendous amount of talent. "Not just that it exports talented people, but also in what they are filling in."

Trump's renewed affiliations with Pakistan

Over the past few months, Trump has showcased a renewed affiliation with Pakistan, which comes at the cost of alienating India. This sits in contrast with the past, as successive US presidents had built ties as a counterweight to China in the Indo-Pacific region. However, Trump appears to have given a harsh reality check to Pakistan recently by halting the processing of immigrant visas for Pakistani citizens.

Indian-origin congressman Ami Bera, who was also a part of the event, added that despite a favourable relationship, US companies have not been investing in Pakistan.

"America is not creating a strategic partnership with Pakistan. American companies are not putting multi-billion-dollar investments in Pakistan. All of that is happening in India," Bera, a Democrat, said.

US's critique over India buying Russian oil

Ties between the US and India have soured under Trump 2.0 after Washington slapped Delhi with an additional 25% tariff, taking the total to 50%, over its purchase of Russian oil-a revenue source the White House said was sustaining Moscow's war in Ukraine. A deadlock over a bilateral trade deal has further complicated matters.

McCormick replied to this by saying the US "hates" that India is still buying Russian oil. He added, "PM Modi is extremely nationalistic in a good way. He's looking out for his country. When India buys cheap Russian oil, America hates that. But he is doing it in the best interest of his country."

On trade

Terming India and the US "like-minded," he highlighted the need for fair collaboration and trade.

"The industry that we bring back to India, the consumption that we do of Indian goods is very important, but we need to make sure there's balance there," McCormick said. After a pause, he quipped, "Anybody who's married understands that."

McCormick said that alienating India would spell big trouble for the US. "If America embraces Indians as friends, we will have peace and prosperity. If we alienate them, it is going to be big trouble for all of us."
