Jio Platforms aims to transition to 6G through software upgrades rather than a fresh infrastructure build-out, managing director Akash Ambani said on October 15, outlining the company's ambition to leverage its existing network and technology capabilities for the next generation of mobile communications.
The strategy reflects Jio's broader focus on developing and monetising its proprietary technology stack, as the company looks to expand beyond connectivity into digital services and international technology partnerships.
Speaking at Jio Platforms IPO press conference, Ambani said the objective was to make the transition to 6G through a software-led approach, potentially reducing the need to replicate the extensive physical infrastructure deployed for previous generations of mobile networks.
Jio has filed more than 7,220 patents and has a workforce of over 12,000 engineers, according to Ambani. Its technology capabilities span mobile networks, broadband, devices, operating systems and digital applications.
The company has also outlined plans to take its technology to international markets through partnerships with telecom operators in both developed and developing economies.Ambani said Jio wanted to position itself as a managed-services partner, offering an end-to-end technology stack rather than operating only as a vendor or software-services provider. The company intends to select partners carefully and focus on opportunities that can generate meaningful financial returns. The international strategy is part of Jio's ambition to help India export technology instead of relying predominantly on imported solutions.
