Japan's former prime minister Shinzo Abe has died, the country's public media agency NHK World reported on July 8, hours after he was shot at an election rally.
The gun bullets had "penetrated his heart", officials of the Nara Medical University hospital, where he was rushed to following the attack, were reported as saying by NHK World in a press briefing following Abe's demise.
"Shinzo Abe was transported to (the hospital) at 12:20pm. He was in a state of cardiac arrest upon arrival. Resuscitation was administered. However, unfortunately he died at 5:03 pm," news agency AFP quoted Professor Hidetada Fukushima of Nara Medical University hospital as saying.
Abe was "shot at from close range", the hospital officials said, according to NHK World, adding that there were "no vital signs when he reached hospital".
