03/02/25, Automobiles Report

Auto sales began on a positive note in January 2025 with all companies posting good sales. Two-wheelers (ICE and electric) and three-wheelers were particularly strong. The encouraging numbers came on the back of a continued healthy demand momentum in rural areas.

PVs and UVs

Amid a seasonally slow month and subdued consumer demand, Hyundai faced headwinds once again, this time joined by Tata Motors. Other companies saw only marginal growth.

Meanwhile, with a continued shift in consumer preference toward SUVs, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), a dominant player in the segment, recorded strong sales growth in January.

Scooters and premium bikes remain the favour

After a weak December, two-wheelers stood as the strongest sector except Bajaj Auto. While demand for executive and entry-level motorcycles saw a slight uptick, driven by a recovery in rural markets, the premium segment continued to accelerate as reflected in Eicher's strong performance.

In addition, scooter demand has picked up substantially as is evident from the numbers of TVS Motors, a big player in the scooter segment.

After taking a nosedive in Dec'24 sales, electric two-wheelers had a complete reversal in January 2025 sales, with Ola Electric and Hero Motocorp reporting the highest growth on a month-on-month (MoM) basis. Ola held the highest market share at 25 percent.

Improving trend for commercial vehicles

After reporting muted growth during Q3 FY2025, the Medium-Heavy Commercial Vehicle (MHCV) segment has shown good progress in January 2025. With government spending expected to increase and infrastructure development, commercial vehicles are expected to gain momentum in 2025.

Three- wheelers

The demand for three-wheelers (3Ws) is picking up in the market with rising demand for e-commerce. TVS Motor has announced its plans to enter the electric cargo three-wheeler market in 2025 with the launch of its passenger e-auto, TVS King EV Max.

Tractors

Buoyed by a strong southwest monsoon and high water storage levels, which supported increased Rabi sowing, rural sentiment remained positive, driving demand growth for M&M. In contrast, Escorts experienced a double-digit decline.

Robust growth in exports

Export demand has been showing a constant upward movement. The revival in the global economy is reflecting in the numbers of almost all leading automobile exporters. All auto majors, posted strong YoY growth in the overseas market.

Outlook

As per the budget 2025, the combination of higher savings, due to tax reductions, and stable economic conditions is expected to spur demand, particularly for two-wheelers, entry-level passenger cars, and mid-range SUVs.

The management of Mahindra & Mahindra and Escorts are anticipating a surge in demand for tractors, driven by kharif procurement, robust Rabi sowing, and enhanced water levels in reservoirs.

Further, with the government's target of achieving the capex plan, the demand for CV is expected to revive in 2025.

Exports are expected to pick up on the
back of a revival in the global economy.
